Ganondagan is the site of a 17th century Seneca Village located in Victor, New York. Currently, this is the only New York State facility dedicated to Native American history. Our Native American Interpreters come from the Seneca, Mohawk and Washoe Paiute Nations. They can present Ganondagan's historical background as well as instill contemporary view points on today's issues.

All of our programs can be scheduled from November1st through April 15 and can be tailored to meet the requirements of each grade level Kindergarten through college.

Ganondagans's Bark Longhouse

This presentation will cover the formation of the Haudenosaunee Culture, specifically the Senecas at Ganondagan. It will include the importance of the construction of the Bark Longhouse. Everyday life in the bark longhouse of the 1600's will be explained.

Interpreters may bring a variety of items from the bark longhouse such as furs, felt had, bone tools, cornhusk items, wooden bowls and spoons with the clan symbols and trade items that changed the life of the Seneca people.

Basketmaking Demonstration

This presentation will show and explain the many steps involved in basket making, from pounding the black ash tree to cleaning the splints, cutting and sizing the splints to laying out a pattern and finally, seeing the finished basket.

Students will try their hand at pounding the log to raise the splints.

A display of many different sizes and types of baskets will be shown.

Uses of the Whitetail Deer

Learn the importance of the white tail deer to the Haudenosaunee peoples from a valuable source of food to unique and clever tools created from the bones. The furs used as a wrap to keep you warm in cold weather and a blanket for your bed, to beautiful tanned clothing and moccasins.

Learn the value of the antlers, hoofs, eyes, brains, internal organs, etc.

The Interpreter will bring numerous examples of the varied uses of the deer.

Cornhusk Doll Workshop

This workshop will present the importance of corn to the Seneca people and its many uses.

The instructor will bring many different examples of cornhusk items to the classroom.

Your class will hear the story of The No Face Cornhusk Doll and construct their own individual doll.

Presented by The First Voice Interpreters of Ganondagan

The First Voice Interpreters will help educators better understand Seneca life and the meaning of stories of the Haudenosaunee through in-service programs.

Your place or ours! We will gladly come to your site or host educators at Ganondagan at your convenience November 1st through April 25th.

Onondawahgah: People of the Great Hill

This workshop will give educators a deeper understanding of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the formation of the Six Nation's League of the Iroquois.

Clan systems, social life, stereotypes and current issues will be discussed.

Submit a list of questions from educators prior to the workshop to make the two hours meaningful and useful.
