You may have noticed many ash trees onsite have rapidly declined over the last few years. The invasive emerald ash borer beetle was first discovered in NY in 2009 and has since decimated once thriving ash populations. Environmental Stewardship staff are targeting these areas for tree plantings along the Earth Is Our Mother trail.

Our 2026 festival brought together peace, education, and positivity! Nya:wëh (thank you) to the volunteers, staff, performers, artists, and educators whose contributions made this year's festival possible.

Every winter, staff from the Environmental Stewardship Team, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and volunteers brave the cold to track rare grassland species as part of the DEC’s Winter Raptor Survey Program.

This month the Environmental Stewardship Team took on a particularly problematic invasive species found at Ganondagan State Historic Site. Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) is an invasive herb that thrives in full sun and grows along roadsides, fields, and fence rows.

Summer is underway and young wildlife is appearing throughout the parks. Fawns, baby birds, and other young wildlife may appear abandoned, but their parents are often close by.

Last October we hosted the amazing outdoor performance of TURTLE ISLAND by G. Peter Jemison (Seneca Nation, Heron Clan) & Plasticiens Volants, with choreography by William Crouse Sr (Seneca Nation, Hawk Clan). Performed by Skywoman Iroquois Dance Theater and produced by Sonia Kozlova Clark from Unicycle Productions and Plasticiens Volants this spectacular experience was enjoyed by visitors of all ages.

Thanks to our amazing volunteers, the rescheduled event was a great success. Together, we husked all the corn we'd harvested this season!

Although light on snow, our 2024 Winter Games was a great success! Hundreds of visitors stopped by to see sled dogs from Kindred Moon Kennels, snow snake, maple syrup demonstrations, storytelling, and more! These beautiful images were take by photographer, Alex Hamer (Oneida).
